November, 2005  Stella helps the Capitals capitalize on a low seed

After an exciting summer season, many of Stella' summer roster have just returned from an equally exhilerating UPA season.

Forming a good part of the Capitals, the Ottawa ladies combined with Toronto players to compete in the fall UPA Club Championship series.

After having played just one tournament together as a unit (Northeast Regionals in Boston), the Capitals beat their seed in the UPA Championships by no less than ten!

Going in seeded last, the Caps had nowhere to go but up. Thursday was a bit of a slow day. Barely beating the team that would eventually take their 16th seed, the Caps failed to beat either Riot or Ozone to take a spot in the power pool. Friday they stepped it up, beating Homebrood and Bnogo to advance to pre-quarters.

Matched up against Box Lunch, and with some Canadian boys on the sideline, the Caps earned their very first entry in the Championship pool.

Though the playoff bracket had them squaring off against eventual champion, Seattle Riot, in the quarters, the Caps proved that they weren't afraid of the number one seed. Going down four straight off the top, the Caps scored some tough upwind points and forced some key turnovers. The game was eventually capped (a har har) at 14-9 in Riot's favour.

Now battling for 6th place, the Caps faced a disappointed but feisty Rare Air squad. The game started slowly, and with a number of calls, but the Caps eventually pulled away. While the Caps were beating their seed, Godiva - the old-time Northeastern powerhouse, was struggling to stay close to theirs.

The fight for fifth place came down to these two teams. While neither team seemed interested in having their cleats on in the early going, as the game went on, Godiva came to understood that the Caps weren't going to hand over the win. After giving up half 5 - 8 and starting on defense, the Caps scored upwind to bring the stretch within two. In the end, clutch layout dees and big plays by the Caps weren't quite enough - and they gave up 5th seed by a score of 12-10.

6th place doesn't seem so bad when you start at 16th.
